In order to be diagnosed with bipolar one, all that is required is that you have one episode of mania or a mixed state, either of which must last at least a week or cause hospitalization.
You may be surprised to note that an episode of depression is not required to be classified as bipolar one, although major depression is extremely common in those with the disorder.
In order to be diagnosed as manic, the following conditions cannot be present:
Drugs cannot be causing your disorder. For example, if you’re on ephedra, or any type of stimulant drug, this may give the doctor a false positive in diagnosing the disorder.
Bipolar one can’t be due to any other medical disorder that mimics the illness.
Schizoaffective disorder and bipolar one a very different, but some other symptoms are the same. Both disorders require different treatment, so a competent doctor will be on the lookout for the difference.
One of the most obvious signs of bipolar one involves having a manic experience from taking antidepressants. Antidepressants are extremely dangerous for someone with bipolar disorder to take, because they send the individual into a manic fit that usually requires hospitalization.
