How to Recover from a Major Manic Episode – Coming Down From Manic Highs

A major mood episode can leave all kinds of trouble in its wake, both in terms of relationships and finances. This entry will not deal with the aftereffects of your actions, but how to directly treat your manic fit in the here and now. Supposing you are currently suffering from a major manic episode, helping you come down from these dizzying highs before you experience psychosis is critical, so that you do not need to be hospitalized or worse, try and kill yourself.

The balance of coming down from a major manic high can be tricky, as descending too rapidly from high to low can cause someone with bipolar to go 180 degrees in the other direction, with the result being major depression.

A major manic episode will take several weeks to come down off of, even if you’re taking a medication like Depakote, which can be dosed up fast. A drug like lithium can take several weeks of increasing dosages before you reach the right amount.

A psychiatrist may recommend additional medications, at least until you get through your manic fit. In particular, when one is manic, it can become almost impossible to sleep, especially with insomnia. One of the drugs your doctor can prescribe includes a sedative, which will help you sleep through the night.
